TITLE: Patrol Officer

DEPARTMENT: Police Department

SUPERVISED BY: Chief of Police

 

FUNCTION:

Under the general supervision of the Police Chief and City Administrator, the Patrol Officer protects and serves the citizens of Omro. This position provides citizen assistance, enforces all federal, state and local laws, and performs patrol duties. Making arrests, issuing traffic violations, providing animal control and investigating crimes and accidents are the primary responsibilities of this position.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND WORK PERFORMED:

Enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances;

Protects the life and property of the citizens of the City of Omro;

Makes arrests, and issues traffic citations;

Performs routine patrol duties and prepares reports and files;

Investigates crimes and accidents, and gathers evidence;

Provides citizen assistance, and assists ambulance crews as needed;

Responds to emergency situations and performs CPR or First Aid;

Operates law enforcement equipment, including patrol vehicles, firearms and communications equipment;

Performs building checks;

Interviews witnesses, suspects and victims;

Maintains department equipment;

Serves warrants, subpoenas and other legal documents;

Testifies in court;

Works with other law enforcement agencies;

Performs traffic control duties;

Investigates all reports that are filed, including theft reports, burglaries, etc.

Follows department policies and procedures;

Follows safety procedures and practices;

Provides animal control functions;

Assists with parades and in situations requiring special escorts.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws and ordinances, CPR and First Aid, law enforcement techniques and mathematics is required.

This employee must be able to efficiently operate firearms, patrol vehicles, computers, two-way radios, radar equipment, breath analysis equipment, and other law enforcement equipment.

The ability to concentrate on tasks in the presence of distractions, to complete and check forms and documents to understand and anticipate problems, and to read and interpret maps, manuals, legal documents, reports and written instructions is required.

'This employee should possess excellent public relation, oral and written communication skills.

Associates Degree or equivalent of 60 college credits. Graduation from the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training Center, 40 hours of continuing education annual, and a valid Wisconsin Driver's License.

 

Physical Requirements

Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, explosives, heights, excessive noise, and adverse weather conditions is expected.

This position contains an element of risk to personal safety while performing the day-to-day duties.

This employee is exposed to blood borne pathogens while investigating crime scenes, seizing and preserving evidence, and assisting emergency medical crews.

Incumbent must be able to pass and maintain all physical activities and requirements of the Wisconsin Law

Enforcement Training Center is required.
